MAS Tax Franchise – October PD Day

MAS Tax Franchise Quarterly Professional Development Day

October 2016

Reflecting on the company’s past year of achievements, MAS Tax Accountants held their Quarterly Professional Development Day in Adelaide, on October 28th 2017. A part of a succession of annual events, it allowed office leaders and staff to come together and discuss current topics affecting the MAS Tax Franchise. Focusing on complicated taxation processes, internal human resources, and managing clients and the service experience, the franchisees enjoyed an informative, but socially balanced day.

MAS Tax Accountants holds a strong relationship with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), who have acted as a trusted source of relevant and reliable presentations for many years. ATO representatives are frequent guest speakers at MAS Tax conferences and events, and this year, Personal Services Income (PSI) specialist, Debra Masterson, presented her professional insights to the group. Focussing on the rules, structures and nature of PSI, Masterson went into the finer subject details and answered questions from the group. A topic of interest was the PSI Tests and testing methods, used to determine whether or not an income source is subject to PSI rules. Being a growing Tax Franchise with thousands of tax-related clients, this information was very useful for the attendees.

A topic that also captured the interest of the franchisees, was effectively staff hiring and hosting interns. As MAS Tax caters to flexible office set-ups, not all of the franchisees currently have employees or are experienced in acquiring extra staff. Leading the presentation and discussion points was MAS Tax CEO, Alan Maddick. Being a part of the talent search for both signing new franchisees and managing his own office, Maddick has extensive experience in the hiring process. The area of hosting interns sparked a lot on interest amongst the group, being dual tax and accounting service providers with the MAS Tax franchise. Accounting has remained a popular study option in Australia, meaning that there is a steady flow of university students seeking work experience in a functioning office environment. Maddick’s presentation covered all of the steps in finding a suitable candidate, from defining the internship roles, placing the ad and evaluating resumes, to the interview process and managing the intern’s activities. Office eligibility for hosting an intern or hiring staff was also discussed, as it is vital to ensure that there is enough work to warrant bringing in extra personnel.

The final presentation of the day covered managing clients and the service experience. Touching on client relationship management and marketing territory, some primary actions of services were discussed, including pricing, delivery, referrals and communications. The starting points of implementing an internal client referral system were also put in place, allowing franchisees to connect their clients to more services within the office network. Further discussions and trials will be exercised in the close future.

Overall, the MAS Tax Accountants Quarterly Professional Development Day in Adelaide, October 2016, was a successful, productive and sociable event. It wraps up the MAS Tax franchise large conferences and presentations for 2016, and the planning for the 2017 events has already begun.
